California became the first state in the USA to ban plastic produce bags in grocery stores, effective January 1, 2025.
Senate Bill 1046 states that stores can only provide “pre-check out bags” if they are compostable or made from recyclable paper.
However, like most solutions - this one is not perfect. Here’s the thing about “compostable” plastic. It does not exist.
Plastic just breaks down into smaller and smaller micro-plastics that end up in our water tables and soil.
So what? The best policy is to not use single-use plastics.
