Earth Day 2025 - Our Power, Our Planet

Earth Day 2025 - Our Power, Our Planet

Today marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, and this year’s theme— Our Power, Our Planet —is a powerful call to action. It emphasizes the urgent need to triple global renewable energy generation by 2030, aiming to replace fossil fuels with clean, sustainable sources like solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal energy.

Why "Our Power, Our Planet" Matters

The theme underscores the critical role of renewable energy in combating climate change. Fossil fuels are the primary contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, which cause global warming.

Here’s How Global Warming Works:

The sun’s energy reaches the Earth as sunlight. Some of that energy is absorbed by the planet, and some is reflected back into space as heat. Greenhouse gases act like a blanket, trapping some of that heat and keeping the planet warm enough to support life.

But when we burn fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), we release extra greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This thickens the “blanket,” trapping more heat than necessary in the earth's atmosphere—and causing the planet to warm up. That’s global warming.

Transitioning to renewable energy not only reduces these emissions but also offers economic benefits, including the potential creation of 14 million new jobs globally.

How You Can Participate

Here are some practical steps you can take to support this year's Earth Day theme:

  • Reduce Energy Consumption: Turn off lights and unplug devices when not in use. Choose energy-efficient appliances and LED bulbs.

  • Support Renewable Energy: Choose a green energy plan from your utility provider or invest in renewable energy sources for your home.

  • Educate Others: Share information about the importance of renewable energy with friends and family. Discuss how collective action can lead to significant environmental improvements. Many people do not understand how global warming works, yet.

  • Choose Green Transportation: Walk, bike, or take public transit when possible. If switching to an electric vehicle is within reach, it’s a great way to cut emissions from the daily commute.

Through informed choices, collective action, and pressure on governments + industry to use more clean energy, we can help speed up the transition to renewable energy and fight climate change.
