It’s estimated that there’s more methane in the atmosphere today than at any point in the last 800,000 years. This contributes to 30% of global warming.
According to Eco Watch, 40 of the 125 members will announce plans for the reduction of methane at the COP27 conference in Egypt this November.
Reducing methane emissions is an important strategy to achieve the goal of keeping global warming to 1.5C.
Participants in the pledge promised to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. This will prevent 0.2 degrees of warming.
Some of the countries announcing their plans for lower methane production are Canada, the US, and Vietnam. They will join 15 countries which have already announced their plans and will be followed by 25 more.
